Meet the Gang
Monica Karwan
Actor/Movement Choreographer
A graduate of UB's Department of Theatre and
Dance, Monica went on to get her M.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy at Leslie
University in Cambridge,
Massachusetts.
A skilled actress and dancer, Monica has appeared in
experimental productions from London, England to Kingstown, Jamaica.
Also a talented choreographer, Monica has designed movement-oriented
productions both here in Buffalo and throughout the country.
For the past four years she's been enjoying the
full-time dramatic role of mommy. She and her husband (fellow Troupe
Member Brian Zybala) are very proud to
have just welcomed their second daughter into the world.
Monica's work with Subversive Theatre began with our
first ever full-scale production, Dario Fo's THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST
in 2002 when she played the role of the Reporter Faletti. She also performed in our
staged reading of Irwin Shaw's BURY THE
DEAD for May Day 2003. After a four
year hiatus in the distant lands of Beantown, we were honored to get Monica back on board for our highly
experimental rendition of Bertolt Brecht's THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE
for the 2007 Buffalo "infringement" Festival where she proved
invaluable both as an actress (pictured above) and as the production's
movement choreographer. Most recently, she pulled of the dual role of
performer and movement choreographer for our off-the-wall re-interpretation
of Eugene O'Neill's THE HAIRY APE for the 2009 "infringement"
Festival.
Monica has also served as movement choreographer
for our production of ...AND
THEY PUT HANDCUFFS ON THE FLOWERS. for the 2008 "infringement"
Festival and for the physical theatre piece OUROBOROS
(2009).
