"I used to think that state aid to the theatre was the solution.  There should be state aid, of course, but I've grown frightened of people who hold the money.
Bureaucrats are dangerous in any art, in any land.  It would be fine if government would put in the money and then go mind its business.  But it won't."

HELLO THOUGHT POLICE!
The experience begins before you even get into the theatre as uniformed Thought Police Officers (Hanna Lipkind*, left and David Butterfield, right) stand guard in the hallway of the Great Arrow Building screening audience members before allowing them to enter.

HATE TIME
In the opening moments of the play, the entire ensemble gathers for Big Brother's signature "Two Minute Hate"
Actors from left to right across the bottom row:
Tom Scahill*, Mary Boatman, Jenna Winnett, David Butterfield, Tamara S. Hopersberger, Rebecca Ward, and Michael O'Hear
Actors from left to right across the top row:
Hanna Lipkind* and Natalie Mack.

THOUGHT CRIME IN ACTION
Protagonist Winston Smith (David Kottler, above) commits his first act of "Thought Crime" against Oceania as he writes out his anti-authoritarian ideals in an illegally obtained journal -- ensemble members Tamara S. Hopersberger* (below left) and Mary Boatman (below right) use interpretive movement to enact Winston's thoughts as he writes them.

NEWSPEAK AROUND THE WATERCOOLER
In the cafeteria of the Ministry of Truth, dutiful Party Member Sam (Tom Scahill, left) expounds the glories of the latest edition of the Newspeak Dictionary to co-workers Winston Smith (Andrew Kottler, center) and Concord (David Butterfield, right).

JOINING THE BROTHERHOOD
In a spurt of courage Winston (Andrew Kottler, center) takes his new found lover Julia (Natalie Mack, right) to see high ranking Party Official O'Brien (Rebecca Ward, left) in the hopes of finding another covert opponent of Big Brother.

WELCOME TO THE MINISTRY OF LOVE
After his inevitable capture by the Thought Police, Winston (Andrew Kottler, left) despondently awaits his fate locked up in the ominous cells of the Ministry of Love with two other "thought criminals" (Jenna Winnett, center, and Tom Scahill*, right).

THE ORDEAL BEGINS
A medical specialist (Tamara S. Hopersberger*, right) preps Winston (Andrew Kottler, left) for interrogation as video projections overhead reveals Winston's increasing disjointed and desperate thoughts.

2 + 2 = 5
Administering torture with a frightening blend of righteousness and tenderness, O'Brien (Rebecca Ward, left) expounds Big Brother's terrifying philosophy of "Double Think" to a bruised and bewildered Winston (Andrew Kottler, center) under the watchful eye of a chillingly dispassionate medical attendant (Tamara S. Hopersberger*, right).

BIG BROTHER'S LOVE
Winston (Andrew Kottler, seated) finds out first hand exactly how the authorities insure the populace's loyalty -- in the depths of the dreaded "Room 101", O'Brien (Rebecca Ward, right) orders the medical attendant (Tamara S. Hopersberger*, left) to strap a cage containing ravenous rats to Winston's face.
