"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

For the fourth installment of our "Subversive Youth Series," Subversive Theatre is proud to present the hard-hitting teen drama THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS featuring a cast of acting students from the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Art (BAVPA) High School under the direction of BAVPA teacher and Subversive Theatre member Kelly Beuth*.

"This play is not about real life. It IS real life... If you have a daughter under 18, you need to see this show. And if she's over 11, you need to take her with you."
-
People Newspapers, Dallas, Texas

A brutally honest journey into the all too real world of teen bullying, THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS has been stunning audiences across America.  Sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking -- the story follows Abby as she tries to find acceptance as the newest member of her high school's championship volleyball team.  Instead she finds a world wrought with peer pressure, cyber-bullying, back-biting, intimidation, eating disorders, cutting, depression, and premature sexuality.  Based on interviews with both the victims and the perpetrators of real life teen bullying, this unflinching work offers a rude awakening to the pressures and social stigmas that loom over the lives of young women in today's world.

"Take every female you know to see this play, then go somewhere and talk. It is a candid, stark, and artistically brutal look at bullying, peer pressure, self-abuse, and finding one's own value... shocking and boldly written."

Directed by the Director of our Subversive Youth Program, Kelly Beuth*, our rendition of THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS features a long list of talented, emerging young actors including Victoria Medley, Aqueira Roberts, Diamond Fonn, Dana Mingo, Yocasta Mencia, Isabelle Trump, Elizabeth Camara, Elijah Tyner, and Mariah Faulkner.

THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS runs June 18th - 28th with performances Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm.  Tickets are $12 general admission or $8 for students.  For both Wednesday performances, admission is pay-what-you-can.  All performances are at Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's Great Arrow Building.

"This brave study of teen girl angst presents an unfortunately realistic and sobering view of what our kids are facing."
-Susan Sugerman, MD, MPH Girls to Women Health and Wellness, PA, Dallas, Texas.
