"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

"'Emotional Creature' is a theatrically lit match
that will light a fire in your heart and has the potential to
spark a girl revolution."

For the fifth installment of our annual "Subversive Youth Series," we are excited to present the Western New York debut of EMOTIONAL CREATURE by theatre's best known feminist playwright Eve Ensler.

In a daring twist on her ground-breaking play THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, Ensler once again bases her work on testimonials from women all over the world -- but this time the focus is on young women coming of age under some of the most challenging conditions. Speaking out on a long list of Twenty-First Century issues spanning from body image, eating disorders, sexual orientation, teen pregnancy, peer pressure, sexual abuse, genital mutilation, and much much more, EMOTIONAL CREATURE boldly offers a rare opportunity for young women to take center stage amidst a whirlwind of monologues, music, and unbridled dance sequences.

Sometimes painful, sometimes funny, always heartfelt and irresistibly honest, this one-act, twelve-character play proudly delivers an empowering celebration of the revolutionary voice inside young women all over the world.

"My short skirt is a liberation flag in the women's army.
I declare these streets, any street, my body's country!"

                                                             -Girl #1

EMOTIONAL CREATURE is directed by our ever-imaginative Youth Series Director Kelly Beuth* and features the emerging talents of her acting students at Buffalo's Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts: Kajana Stover, Hanifah Habeeb, Aqueira Roberts, Anika Pace, Diamond Fonn, Kyla Rowsey, Corinne McLoughlin, Sierra Johnson, Elizabeth Camara, Silver Johnson, Isabelle Trump, and Victoria Medley.  Sound & Set Design is by the director herself with Lighting Design by Subversive Theatre's Founder and Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman*.

This is the fifth edition of our "Subversive Youth Series" dedicated to giving young and developing artists the opportunity to present daring new plays that speak out with a radical voice on issues facing young people today.  Our program began back in 2011 with TICK, TICK... BOOM! by Jonathan Larsen.  It was followed by BANG, BANG, YOU'RE DEAD by William Mastrosimone in 2012 and FOUR LITTLE GIRLS: BIRMINGHAM 1963 to mark the fifty year anniversary of the racist Birmingham bombings in 2013.  Most recently, we presented THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS by Linda Daugherty.

We're thrilled to see this program continue to bloom and grow over the years.  We hope you'll join us to see the latest installment of this always-raw, always-relevant, always inspiring tradition.

"Barbie isn't who you think she is.  Free Barbie!!!"
                                                             -Girl #5

EMOTIONAL CREATURE runs June 11th - 20th with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm.  For both Thursday performances, admission is pay-what-you-can.  There will be one preview performance on Wednesday, June 10th at 8pm which is open to the public on a pay-what-you-can basis.  All shows are in our regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.
