"The thrust for freedom is the quality in tragedy which exalts.  The revolutionary questioning of the stable environment is what terrifies.  In no way is the common man debarred from such thoughts or such actions."

-Arthur Miller
1949

About the Cast + Crew

THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE
Here's the fearless team that brought this bizarre work to life.

Kurt "Vile" Schneiderman*
(Director)
Subversive Theatre's Founder & Artistic Director, Kurt is elated to be directing just the sort of experimental style production he's always wanted to do -- and honored by this opportunity to bring to life the words of political theatre guru Bertolt Brecht.
Kurt has directed the lion's share of Subversive Theatre's shows including PAUL ROBESON SPEAKS OUT! (2005), ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST (2003), and FOUNDATIONS (2007).
Kurt sends all his love to Jenny the Magnificent without whom all of this would be worthless.

Leonard Ziolkowski
("Coolie")
One of our area's most respect practitioners of a wide range of mime and movement techniques, Lenny has lent his unique talents to a number of performance art-oriented theatre projects including Skeletons in the Closet's productions of  THE BEDEVILED CHEST and MEDIUM RARE as well as the New Phoenix Theatre's productions of METAMORPHOSIS, and GILGAMESH.
This project is Lenny's first time working with Subversive Theatre.

Travis Taber
("Merchant")
Getting ready for his senior year, Travis is a Theatre Major at the University at Buffalo where he has starred in such experimental productions as last semester's TARZAN OF THE APES.
This is Travis' first time working with Subversive Theatre.

Hasheen DeBerry*
("Guide/Ensemble")
A very active member of Subversive Theatre, Hasheen is excited to be a part of this performance.  He'd like to thank the cast and crew for their hard work and all of those who braved the elements to watch us expose the evils of the Man!
Hasheen's other Subversive Theatre credits include SUBVERSIVE SHORTS 2007, SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER (2007), and FOUNDATIONS (2007).

Patricia Armstrong*
("First Judge/Ensemble" & Costume Designer)
A fervent member of Subversive Theatre, Pat is also a member of the Ujima Theatre Company, Theatre for Change, Playback Theatre of Buffalo, and Women on the Edge as well as appearing regularly with O'Connell and Company's DIVA BY DIVA showcase.
An Artie nominated actress and costumer, Pat has appeared on many stages in the Buffalo area.  Her directing credits include THE LUNATIC WITHIN (traveled to the London, Ontario Fringe Festival) and SHADOWS (a one-man show in San Francisco).
Previous appearances with Subversive Theatre include our staged readings of BURY THE DEAD (2005), WHAT I HEARD ABOUT IRAQ (2006), and SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER (2007).  We're thrilled to finally feature Pat in one of our full scale productions!

Anthony Tyrpak
("Innkeeper/Ensemble")
Tony is proud to appear in the "infringement" Festival for his second year in a row.  In last year's Festival he appeared in the production of THE RESPECTFUL PROSTITUTE at the New Phoenix Theatre.
Tony has performed in many shows at Canisius College as part of their Drama Club, the Little Theatre.  He would like to thank Hasheen for bringing this to his attention, the wonderful cast, Liz for sticking with him through these busy times, and all his friends for their support (Dan + Crimes).
This is Tony's first appearance with Subversive Theatre.

Monica Karwan*
("Widow/Ensemble" & Movement Choreographer)
Monica first appeared with Subversive Theatre in our first ever full-scale production, THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST, in 2003.  We're thrilled to have her back on board after all these years!
After graduating from UB's Department of Theatre and Dance, Monica went on to get her M.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  A skilled actress and dancer, Monica has appeared in experimental productions from London, England to Kingstown, Jamaica.
For the past two years she's been enjoying the full-time dramatic role of mommy.  She and her husband will be welcoming a second daughter in September.

Marshall Maxwell*
("Second Judge/First Policeman/Ensemble")
A member of Subversive Theatre's Board of Directors, Marshall is an impassioned supporter of all forms of political theatre.
A well-traveled thespian, Marshall has been a part of radical productions with such notable troupes as Boston's Little Flagg's Theatre and even NYC's La Mama Cafe.  His Buffalo credits include the New Phoenix Theatre's production of RESERVOIR DOGS and the Paul Robeson Theatre's THE MIGHTY GENTS.
Previous appearances with Subversive Theatre include A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON MY WAY TO SHOOT THE CZAR for the 2004 Toronto Fringe Festival, FOUNDATIONS (2007), and SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER (2007).

Briana Jernigan
("Third Judge/Ensemble")
A former student of Studio Arena's Theatre School, Briana will continue her education as a sophomore theater major at the University of Buffalo this fall.  During her freshman year of college, she was cast in an experimental production of LOCUS directed by Drew McCabe and was also involved in a student directed horror film THE ESCAPE OF PATIENT 9836.
Briana would like to thank Kurt and the cast for such a great experience while working on this project.
This is Briana's first appearance with Subversive Theatre.

Kevin Cain*
("Leader of the Second Caravan/Second Policeman/Ensemble")
Actor, artist, musician and general all-around bohemian experimentalist, Kevin is thrilled to have this opportunity to work on a "subversive" project such as this.
Kevin only recently made his foray into the world of acting in the New Phoenix Theatre's production of GILGAMESH earlier this spring.
Kevin then went on to make his Subversive debut in our production of SUBVERSIVE SHORTS 2007 in June.
Talented, cooperative, creative, and reliable, it's great to have him in the mix once again.

Patrick Cain
(Lead Musician & Foley Artist)
The quintessential bohemian artist, Patrick has been involved -- both as a musician and as a performer -- in many an experimental theatrical endeavor.
As a performer, Patrick has lent his talents to such off-the-beaten-path projects as the New Phoenix Theatre's ALICE UNDERGROUND and Skeletons in the Closet's MEDIUM RARE.
As a musician, he has provided live music and foley effects for performance art style productions like the New Phoenix's renditions of METAMORPHOSIS and GILGAMESH.
This is Patrick's first time working with Subversive Theatre.

Jeanette Schneiderman*
(Stage Manager & Props Mistress)
A member of Subversive Theatre's Board of Directors, Jenny has provided invaluable organizational assistance to a long list of our productions including BURY THE DEAD (2005), MOTHER DIS-COURAGE (2005) SINCERITY FOREVER (2006), and SUBVERSIVE SHORTS 2007, to name only a few.
One of those wonderful behind-the-scenes-ians who makes everything possible, it is a delight to have Jenny involved with this production.

Matt Clabeaux*
(Graphic Designer)
Our resident graphic designer, Matt has concocted the images used on many a Subversive Theatre poster including A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON MY WAY TO SHOOT THE CZAR (2004), THE MOTHER (2005), MOTHER DIS-COURAGE (2005), and SUBVERSIVE SHORTS 2007.
A mild-manner art teacher by day, Matt is the creative genius behind Revolutionary Graphics and the proud author of his first book, MY OWN PRIVATE HELL.

Michael Fanelli*
(House Manager)
Also a member of Subversive Theatre's Board of Directors, Mike is occasionally helpful.
