About the Author
Kurt "Vile" Schneiderman
The Founder and Artistic Director of the
Subversive Theatre Collective, Kurt is thrilled -- after three years on the
drawing board -- to at long last see his newest play come to life!
Kurt launched Subversive Theatre because of his
deeply felt belief that there should be more to art than simple
entertainment. He wanted to produce art that spoke to everyday people,
that addressed real issues and encouraged people to face up to real problems
in our society.
In his most recent work, FOUNDATIONS, Kurt has
found the perfect vehicle for these beliefs -- it's a story about an everyday
group of blue-collar workers who are confronted by some of the most grotesque
hypocrisies of our time and who have to find a way to slog through it
all.
As a playwright, Kurt has written a long list of
works . . . three of which have been produced by Subversive Theatre.
They include MANIFEST DESTINY BLUES which was performed at the New
Phoenix Theatre in 2003, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON MY WAY TO SHOOT THE CZAR
which was performed at the 2004 Toronto Fringe Festival, and MOTHER DIS-COURAGE
which was performed in Montreal, Buffalo, and NYC as part of the international
"infringement" Festival circuit.
As a director, Kurt made his debut with Subversive
Theatre's production of THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST in 2002
and has since directed the lion's share of our productions.
For the New Phoenix Theatre he directed THE RESERVOIR in 2002 and for
the Buffalo Ensemble Theatre he directed EBENEZER S. in 2004 and BEHIND
THE GREEN DOG in 2005.
As a professor, Kurt teaches playwrighting at
Canisius College as well as at the Just Buffalo Literary Center. As a
dramatic critic, Kurt has written for such publications as Outcome Magazine,
Buffalo Beat, Blue Dog, Nightlife Magazine, and the Buffalo Weekly Jewish
Review.
As a technician, Kurt has worked with just about
theatre in town, including Studio Arena, Kavinoky, Shakespeare in Delaware
Park, New Phoenix, Lightsedge, the Buffalo Ensemble Theatre, Indigo
Productions, and Skeletons in the Closet Productions.
Playwright, activist, socialist, and technician, Kurt
does his best to bring all these talents together . . . and keep Subversive
Theatre running in any way he can.
