"I have never separated my work as an artist from my work as a human being.  I've always put it even more strongly that, to me, my art is always a weapon."

ABOUT THE PLAY:

ELEGY FOR STANLEY GORSKI, like many of Manny Fried's works, is very directly about the playwright's own experience as a labor organizer in the factories of Buffalo in the 1950s.  This play follows the tragic events of one rank and file union member -- Stanley Gorski.  Caught up amidst a raging battle between the radicals and the anti-communists within his own union, some meddling McCarthyite priests, petty run-ins with the law, and a roller coaster off-again-on-again relationship with his wife, Brother Gorski struggles to keep his wits and stand by both his principles and his fellow union members.

Swirling with the bitter divisions of the time, ELEGY FOR STANLEY GORSKI offers a vivid portrayal of the blue collar world of Buffalo's not-so-distant past and serves as a powerful testament to the incredible psychological and physical price that some union activists paid to build the labor movement in this country.
