THE HAIRY APE
by Eugene O'Neill
"The Hairy Ape
could easily lend itself to radical propaganda, and it is somewhat surprising
that it has not already been used for this purpose."
-FBI REPORT ON EUGENE O'NEILL, 1922

For the fifth-annual Buffalo
"infringement" Festival, Subversive Theatre is very excited to
present a wildly experimental rendition of Eugene O'Neill's wonderfully
class conscious black comedy THE HAIRY APE.
Set in the intensely economically-stratified world of the
early 1900s, this one-act play follows the half comic misadventures of a boisterous working man
known only as "The Yank" who
is eager to kill off his bourgeois oppressors but just can't quite figure out how to get his
extermination campaign underway!
Directed by Subversive Theatre's Founder &
Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman*, our production adds a dizzying barrage
of infringy
twists to O'Neill's idiosyncratic classic. Featuring puppetry,
pantomime, juggling, interpretive movement, live music and Foley effects, mask
work, and elaborate costumery, this HAIRY APE
offers up a
mind-bendingly
beautiful spectacle that is all too rare to find in the world of Buffalo
Theatre!
Artie-Award-nominated
actress Candice Kogut* anchors a daringly open minded cast that also
includes Patrick Cameron, Paul O'Hern, Sarah Brown, Betsy Bittar, John Vines,
Anthony Orlowski and Monica Karwan* as well as notorious experimental theatre
practitioners Brian
Zybala* and Drew McCabe*.
Our live found-sound orchestra features mad bohemian
musicians Patrick Cain and Gabriel Gutierrez with stylized movement
choreographed by Monica Karwan*, puppetry by internationally-trained puppeteer artist
Mark Tattenbaum*, and mime/mask work by local movement virtuoso Leonard
Ziolkowski.
Lighting Design is by Craig Freudenthal with Costume Design by Paul Stephenson* and Nicole
Bagay, Set Design by Hank Schmidt, Fight Choreography by Candice Kogut*,
set painting by Jess Fialko, poster illustrations by Matthew Clabeaux*,
backdrop illustrations by Melissa Grosse, and backdrop painting by Franklin
LaVoie*,
Michael Fanelli*, Monica Karwan*, and others.
Each performance runs roughly one hour and fifteen
minutes long. All performances are at Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue, "The
Manny Fried Playhouse" on the third floor of North Buffalo's
Great Arrow Building at 255 Great Arrow Avenue.
Like all Subversive Theatre productions, admission
for this show is free with donations gratefully accepted before, during, and
after each performance. Reservations are not available, seating is on a
first-come-first-served basis with doors opening one half hour prior to each performance.
