Director's Notes for
...and they put handcuffs on the
flowers."
Set in a Spanish prison in 1969
and containing much discussion of the moon landing and events of the Spanish
Civil War, this play may seem out of date at first glance. But we
believe that "...and they put handcuffs on the flowers."
offers a timeless outcry against imprisonment, brutality,
and authoritarianism that is all too relevant in our modern world of Patriot
Acts and waterboardings.
Our production should not really be looked upon as a
work of theatre. If anything, this is anti-theatre. It is not
clean and polished, it is unapologetically raw and deliberately jarring.
This is not a play about comfort and
complacency, it is about the crushing effects of oppression on the human mind,
body, and heart and the need to stand up against such oppression.
A play like this does not call for tuxedoes and
champagne receptions. That's why we chose to hold performances in the
dank and uncomfortable confines of the former Kitchen Distribution Warehouse.
The gritty surroundings are intended to make this play's painful
subject matter all the more intense and effecting.
This is not a play for the weak of heart. This
is a journey to a place that many people would rather not go -- rather turn a
blind eye to. For those of you who have the courage to go on this
journey with us, we are honored to have you aboard. As always at
Subversive Theatre, we pledge to do our utmost to make this journey as
complete, as unique, and as memorable as possible.
