For this summer's "infringement"
Festival, Subversive Theatre unapologetically presents a highly experimental
version of Fernando Arrabal's defiantly graphic masterpiece "...and they put
handcuffs on the flowers." Set in the prisons of Fascist Spain
in 1969, this hour-and-a-half-long play explores the depths of human suffering
under the horrors of military dictatorship.
While virtually unknown in America, Spanish
playwright/poet/filmmaker Fernando Arrabal is widely considered in Europe to
be one of the most important artists of the Twentieth Century. The
Dictionary of French Language Literatures describes Arrabal's original
theatrical style -- called the "Theatre of Panic" --
as:
"...a wild, brutal, cacophonous, and joyously
provocative world. It is a dramatic carnival in which the carcass of our
"advanced" civilizations is barbecued over the spits of a permanent
revolution."
Our rendition of what is perhaps Arrabal's most
infamously daring work is as
unconventional as the play itself. To fully capture the dank and oppressive
atmosphere of the times, our production is performed entirely in the cavernous
basement of a defunct warehouse on Buffalo's West Side and involves live
improvisational music by Patrick Cain and stylized mask, movement, and shadow
work choreographed by Monica Karwan*.
Directed by Subversive Theatre's Artistic Director
Kurt Schneiderman*, the cast features Victor Morales, Lawrence Rowswell*, Brian
Zybala*, Lenny Ziolkowski, Jessica Stuber*, Candice Kogut, Dechen Dolkar, and
Mary Jayne Ertel. Set design is by Dyan O'Connell*, Lighting Design by
Carlie Todoro-Rickus*, and Costume Design by Jessica Stuber*.
All performances are at the Former Kitchen
Distribution Warehouse at 20 Auburn Avenue, two doors west of the corner of
Auburn Avenue & Niagara Street -- literally the last building on your
right before you fall into the Niagara River. Performances are Saturday,
July 26th at 10:00pm, Sunday, July 27th at 9:00pm, Tuesday, July 29th at
10:00pm, Friday, August 1st at 10:00pm, and Saturday, August 2nd at 11:00pm.
Admission to all shows is free with
donations gratefully accepted before and after each performance. Doors
open twenty minutes prior to show times. Reservations are not available,
seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. Due to the nature of the
performance, late-comers cannot be admitted. Performances run roughly
one hour and twenty-five minutes without intermission.
Weaving together elements of drama, music, and
performance art, our rendition of this rarely-performed, in-your-face masterpiece of political theatre makes for a totally unique and powerful
experience that should not be missed. We look forward to seeing you at "...and
they put handcuffs on the flowers."
