Musical
'Hamlet'
By Colin Dabkowski
"HAMLET," perhaps Shakespeare's most quoted, beloved and
oft-performed tragedy, has been adapted to within an inch of its life.
There are small-cast versions, film versions, operatic versions, ballet
versions, all-female versions and versions that befuddle all attempts at
description.
There are, however, very few one-man musical adaptations of the bard's
great tale.
"I AM HAMLET," a one-man show performed by Brian Morey and
directed by Joe Siracusa that begins its run in the Manny Fried Playhouse (255
Great Arrow Ave.) on Thursday, is just such a play. Morey takes on the
entire dramatis personae of the tragedy in a show that has been picking
up steam and raising eyebrows since its premiere last year in
Aurora.
Morey punctuates his performance with musical numbers, such as Ophelia's
outraged delivery of "No More" and Hamlet's wistful "Beautiful
Ophelia." It comes to Buffalo after a successful run last fall
at the Boston Center for the Arts. The show, presented by the Subversive
Theatre Collective, stays parked at the Manny Fried Playhouse through June
5. For more information, call 408-0499 or visit www.iamhamlet.com
