For the first show in our
2011-2012 Season of Plays, Subversive Theatre is excited to present one of
the most notoriously "subversive" plays of the modern theatre.
MARAT/SADE by Peter Weiss
is an unflinchingly primal and provocative exploration of rage,
suppression, and revolution.
Based on astonishingly true
historical events, MARAT/SADE
takes us to the French Mental Asylum of Charenton where the
ever-controversial Marquis De Sade uses his fellow inmates to perform a
twisted tale of political violence and personal rage.
Deliciously raw and passionate, this watershed work of 1960s experimental
protest theatre offers a timeless outcry against authority, conformity, and
hypocrisy.
Featuring a mammoth cast of over
twenty performers, our rendition is no less bold than the play itself weaving
together live music and song with a whirlwind of evocative
performance techniques including mime, interpretive movement, burlesque,
and extensive stage combat all amidst inventive in-your-face staging
that puts audiences right in the heart of the action for a theatrical
experience like no other.
MARAT/SADE
is directed by Subversive Theatre's Founder & Artistic Director Kurt
Schneiderman* and stars Christopher Standart* as the Marquis De
Sade, Lisa Vitrano as assassin Charlotte Corday, and Kevin Iuzzini
as revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat with original music written and
performed live by Moshe Shulman.
Our extensive ensemble also
features Becky Globus*, Michael Votta, Lawrence Rowswell*, Scot Kaitanowski*, Elexa Kopty, Justin Krall, Candace
M. Whitfield, Emily Pedersen*, Leo DiBello,
Megan Piret, Murry Galloway, Allison Funk, India Moss, Dacia Dunnigan, Jessica
Marie
Stahr, Cindy Miller, Bryan Figueroa, and Stephen Harris.
Lighting Design is by Katie
Gilliland* with Set Design by Michael Lodick, Costume Design by Max
Levitt, Graphic Design by Scot Kaitanowski*, and Props by Emily
Pedersen*. Movement Choreography is by Monica Karwan* with
Fight Choreography by Justin Krall. Original Score and Live
Instrumental Music is provided by Moshe Shulman. Photography and
Web Design are by Kurt Schneiderman*.
MARAT/SADE
runs September 15th through October 15th with performances Thursdays,
Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm at Subversive Theatre's regular performance
venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third
floor of North Buffalo's Great Arrow Building.
Tickets are $20.00 general
admission or $15.00 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre
members. For all Thursday performances (except Opening Night), admission
