"A people who do not cherish and promote their theatre are, if not yet dead, in the process of dying, just as theatre which does not capture the vibrancy of society, of history, the drama of its people, but is only a casino or a place to kill time."

For Curtain Up 2010, Subversive Theatre is proud to present a rare working class musical -- THE FURIES OF MOTHER JONES by Obie Award-winning playwright and theatre-visionary Maxine Klein.  Our production runs September 9th-October 9th under the direction of emerging stage artist and indy musician Megan Callahan*

Golden-throated thespians Sharon Strait, Leah Russo, and Marshall Maxwell head up this play’s gargantuan ensemble with live musical accompaniment by Buffalo’s own beloved bluegrass balladeers, the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Band.

Belting out heart-felt dirt-under-your-fingernails Appalachian-style ballads, this gutsy historical drama weaves together the struggles of 1960s West Virginia Coal Miners with the storied Turn-of-the-Century union battles of the incomparable labor activist Mary Harris Jones – renowned in the labor movement simply as “Mother Jones.”  This unique musical-for-the-masses offers an impassioned testament to the sacrifices of everyday working people to win many of the rights we take for granted today.

The fifth installment of our annual "Workers’ Power Play Series," Subversive Theatre is proud to dedicate this production to the memories of those Miners who lost their lives in West Virginia’s most recent mining disaster earlier this year.  Our production will also include a lobby exhibition featuring art and photography highlighting the labor movement, the history contained within the play, as well as a glimpse into the state and impact of the coal mining industry past and present.

THE FURIES OF MOTHER JONES runs September 9th through October 9th with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm at Subversive Theatre’s regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo’s Great Arrow Building.  Tickets are $15 general admission or $10 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.  Please note: no performance Saturday, September 11th.  For all Thursday performances other than Opening Night, admission is on a pay-what-you-can basis.

The complete ensemble features Sharon Strait, Leah Russo, Marshall Maxwell*, Kevin Craig, Hanna Lipkind*, Elizabeth Oddy, Leon Copeland*, Tilke Hill, Justine Rodriguez, Eric Mowery*, Travis Hedland, Bryan Figueroa, Tim Stuff*, Hasheen DeBerry*, and M. Joseph Fratello.  Live musical accompaniment is by members of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Band -- Matthew Crane, Katie Panfil, Brandon Berry, and Joe Donohue -- with Musical Direction by Joe Donohue and dramaturgical work by Phil Knoerzer*.

Fight Choreography is by Adam Rath with Movement Choreography by Nancy Hughes.  Costume Design is by Caitlin McLeod with Lighting Design by Kurt Schneiderman*, and Set Design by Tom Izard*.
