NECESSARY TARGETS
is a powerful psychological drama on the devastating effects of rape, murder,
and dehumanization experienced by women war refugees of the 1990s Yugoslavian
Civil War. Inspired by a series of interviews of Bosnian women by
the author in the immediate aftermath of the conflict, NECESSARY TARGETS
is a stunning, unflinching, and empowering testament to the emotional toll
suffered by some of war's most undeserving victims. “When we think of war,” Ensler writes in
the introduction to her play, “we think of it as something that
happens to men.” The focus is on bombs and the immediate
destruction that they wreak. Little media attention or conscious thought
on the part of people living in other countries is focused on the aftermath of
war. “But after the bombing,” she explains, “that's
when the real war begins.” Author
of the wildly famous play THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES,
Eve Ensler is undoubtedly one of the most important writers on women's issues
in the world today. An important addition to her body of work, NECESSARY TARGETS
speaks with beautiful mixture of humanity and brutal honesty on one of the
most horrifying cases of ethnic cleansing since the Second World War. Directed by Subversive Theatre's Overall
Dramaturg Susan Forbes*, our rendition of NECESSARY TARGETS
features members of the women's acting troupe The Brazen Faced
Varlets. The cast features Jane Cudmore, Lara Haberberger*+,
Kelly Beuth*+, Jane Cudmore, Heather Fangsrud*+, Theresa Di-Muro Wilbur,
Brittany Kucala, and Martha Rothkopf. Set Design is by Sue Franclemont with Sound Design by
John Shotwell*, Costume Design by Paul Stephenson*, and Lighting Design by Joan Golda. Performances run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at
8pm from April 8th - 30th (please note: no performance on Friday,
April 23rd) at Subversive Theatre's regular
