Cultivating the experimental side of Subversive Theatre,
troupe member Brian Zybala dreamed up OUROBOROS
-- an almost-wordless performance piece using pantomime, dance,
improvisational movement and a smorgasbord of impassioned soundscapes to
explore the cyclical evolution of the Human Race through love, warfare,
discovery, exploitation, and death.
Employing experimental techniques from the very
outset, OUROBOROS was a play without a script. Instead Director
Zybala and his ensemble gradually discovered each aspect of the production
through a series of improvisational exercises. The result was a totally
unique and truly collectivist presentation posing many crucial questions about
the very structure of civilizations past and present.
Flashing back to The Garden of Eden and forward
to the World Trade Center bombing, OUROBOROS followed the grand
sweep of history showing our species' bizarre path from loose
egalitarian hunter/gatherer communities, to slavery, to the unofficial slavery
of industrialization, militarism, and near self-obliteration.
Staged in an appropriately
hippie-trippy style with the theatre emptied of everything but a circle of
chairs and a large elliptical sandpit in the middle of the room, actors clad
in loose-fitting, earth-toned costumes, and an enveloping onslaught of psychedelic
sound-scapes,
the OUROBOROS "experience" took
audiences on a mind-bendingly beautiful journey that will not be soon
forgotten. Thank you Brian Zybala for helping Subversive Theatre spread
its experimental wings!
