Fresh from it's New York City debut, this new work by Canadian playwright Judith
Thompson features three incendiary monologues from three only slightly
fictionalized sources to vividly illustrate the horrors of our modern day "War
on Terror" from three completely different perspectives.
The first monologue shows us a former Abu Graib
prison guard who is trying to piece her life back together after a series of
disgusting photos made her the focus of worldwide attention. As she
tells us her story, the vicious psychological cycle of
oppression-begets-oppression becomes frighteningly clear.
In the second monologue, a British scientist tells
his story of how he came to blow the whistle on the Blair Government's phony
case for invading Iraq . . . as he quietly bleeds to death just outside of
London.
In the third and most powerful monologue, an Iraqi
woman whose husband was a leading figure in the Iraqi Communist Party tells
her devastating tale of suffering under both Saddam Hussein's Regime as well
as under the American Occupation.
Winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for
2008, PALACE OF THE END is an incredibly moving play that
offers a timeless denunciation of war while simultaneously speaking out on
many of the most pressing issues of our time with an impassioned urgency that
plays all too rarely achieve.
Directed by Subversive Theatre's own Virginia
Brannon*, our production stars (in order of appearance) Kelly Beuth*, Lawrence
Rowswell*, and Dana Block. Set Design is by Dyan O'Connell*, with
Lighting Design by Carlie Todoro-Rickus*, and Sound Design by John Shotwell.
