BUFFALO NEWS PREVIEW IN GUSTO MAGAZINE 3/7/08
Controversial “Rachel Corrie,” comes to Main Street Cabaret
BY COLIN DABKOWSKI News Arts Writer
In a move that’s sure to raise a few eyebrows, two venturous small
theater companies, Buffalo United Artists and Subversive Theatre, are
producing a controversial one-woman show about the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
The show, “My Name Is Rachel Corrie,” is adapted from the
letters, e-mails and diary entries of Corrie, a 23-year-old
American activist who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer in 2006 while
attempting to protest the demolition of a home in Gaza. The show originally
premiered in London. A planned run at that New York Theater Workshop in
early 2006 was canceled due to concerns about its perceived pro-Palestinian
content, which then ignited a controversy about claims of censorship and the
play’s content before the play was eventually produced later that year. The
show was written by actor Alan Rickman and stars, in its Buffalo production,
local actor Katie White.
“Whether one is sympathetic with her or not,” Rickman told
British Newspaper the Guardian, “her voice is like a clarion in the fog
and should be heard.”
Planned productions are scheduled for Toronto in May and the northern
Israeli city of Haifa on March 16, the five-year anniversary of Corrie’s
death. The show opens at 8 tonight at Main Street Cabaret, 672 Main St. It
runs through March 29. Call 886-9239 or visit buffalobua.org. — Colin
