After years of lying dormant, the
proud tradition of protest theatre has quite suddenly awakened from its long
slumber. Outrage at the Iraq War and at the Bush Administration in
general has inspired a whole new generation of American playwrights to pick up
their pens and speak out on the issues of the day.
We at Subversive Theatre were eager to help foster
this exciting new movement and -- at the same time -- give our audiences here
in Buffalo a taste of the wide spectrum of political plays that are popping up
all over the Nation. And so we created "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs"
-- a showcase of short new political plays by playwrights from all over the
U.S.A.
Our first "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" Showcase
was held in November of 2005 in the bohemian confines of Allentown's Rust Belt
Books. This program featured five different radical shorts by
playwrights from Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Boston, and one from
a playwright right here in Buffalo. The styles of work featured
everything from spoof to docudrama, from the realistic to the absurd, and from
the poetic to the profane.
This program was such a success that we've decided to
make it a regular offering. So we put together a team of seven different
subversive directors and -- when we sent out the call for submissions -- we
were honored to receive over fifty different entries from every corner of
America! It was no small task to comb through all the wild and
fascinating material, but -- after much debate -- our seven-person directorial
team finally settled on a line-up of shorts that we think will make for an
excellent evening of political theatre.
And so, come June, we'll return to the
cramped back room of Rust Belt Books to present "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs
2007". Let the renaissance in American political theatre begin!
