"The thrust for freedom is the quality in tragedy which exalts.  The revolutionary questioning of the stable environment is what terrifies.  In no way is the common man debarred from such thoughts or such actions."

-Arthur Miller
1949

The second show in our  2007 "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" Showcase

A RANDOM ACT
by Matt Casarino
Directed by Katie White*

Starring
Hasheen DeBerry* as "Dan"
Mary Loftus* as "Terry"

ABOUT THE PLAY.

"A Random Act" is a zany five-minute skit about a dogged panhandler and liberal guilt run ridiculously amok.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT.
Matt Casarino.
Matt's plays have been produced in 49 states (come on, Hawaii!) and eight countries.  A member of the Dramatists' Guild, Matt has had multiple works published by Playscripts Inc. and Smith & Kraus.  His full-length play THE PORNOZOMBIES was recently published by Original Works after successful runs in San Jose and Chicago.  He lives in Delaware, of all places, with his wife and some very amusing pets. Matt is delighted both to be a part of "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" and to have a play in the same showcase with his friend Hank.

WORDS FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT.
"A Random Act" was my very first play, and it just turned 10 years old.  I had planned on writing a short drama, but I ended up satirizing liberal guilt instead.  I couldn't help it - we liberals are just so much fun to satirize.  "A Random Act" has had a good life - it was first produced by City Theater in Wilmington, Delaware, and has appeared twice at the Philly Fringe and once in California."

ABOUT THE CAST.
Hasheen DeBerry* ("Dan").
One of Subversive Theatre's newer members, Hasheen has been involved with theatre in many capacities both on and off stage since 2001.
A recent graduate of Canisius College, Hasheen appeared in many of their drama club productions as well trying his hand at stage management, lighting, sound, and set construction.
In addition to his work in "A Random Act," Hasheen is also serving as the technical director/stage manager for this entire "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" production.
Hasheen first appearance with Subversive Theatre came in our 2007 production of FOUNDATIONS at the New Phoenix Theatre.  Most recently he appeared in our staged reading of SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER for May Day 2007.

Mary Loftus* ("Terry").
A long-time member of Subversive Theatre, Mary first appeared with our troupe in  our staged reading of BURY THE DEAD (pictured left) for the Buffalo rendition of the international "Bury the Dead Project" on September 19th, 2005.
A regular face on stage with the Buffalo United Artists Theatre, Mary is a seasoned theatre veteran with a long list of Buffalo stage credits under her belt.  An emphatic supporter of many controversial causes and many daring artistic endeavors, we are proud to count Mary among our ranks.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR.
Katie White*.
A fervent member of Subversive Theatre and a much respected actor, Katie is often seen on stage with the Buffalo United Artists Theatre, Kavinoky, and Shakespeare in the Park, to name only a few.
Katie's acting credits with Subversive Theatre include IN THE HEART OF AMERICA (2004), BURY THE DEAD (2005), and SINCERITY FOREVER (2007).
Also a talented director, Katie directed our staged reading of WHAT I HEARD ABOUT IRAQ on March 20th, 2006 to mark the third anniversary of the U.S. Invasion of Iraq.
