by Si Kahn
installment #11 of our
"workers' power play series"
directed by Drew McCabe
starring Melissa Leventhal & Tim Goehrig
with musical direction by Tom Naples
mom is back and she is PISSED!
known as the "hellcat organizer" and as "the most dangerous woman in the world," Mary Harris ("Mother") Jones fought on the front lines in the battle for workers' rights with an earth shattering fury earning the scorn of bosses all across america, scourging presidents from Grover Cleveland to Teddy Roosevelt.
this new musical shows us Mother Jones in a bar in the afterlife looking back on the highs and lows of her incredible 100 years on the planet belting out a steady stream of the kind of breath-taking down home blue collar ballads that audiences expect from internationally renowned musician/author/song writer/activist Si Kahn.
subversive theatre is thrilled to once again present the world-debut of Si's work (we featured his play JOE HILL'S LAST WILL to mark the 100 year anniversary of Joe Hill's execution in 2015). Proclaimed "the poet laureate of the North Carolina AFL-CIO" by an unanimous resolution, Si's unmistakable pro-worker, pro-union, pro-activist creations are a beautiful reminder of everything proletarian art can be.
